A different kind of job to the ones on the Wolds
York is about twenty miles down the A64 and we work there regularly, but the work is a different shape. There is more commercial car parking, more access that has to be booked and worked around, and a lot more jobs where the biggest question is not how to lay it but how to get the wagon in.
Car parks and commercial premises
A good part of what we do around York is surfacing parking areas: offices, business parks, premises with a yard and staff parking behind them, and residential blocks with shared parking that has never been properly set out.
On a working site the practical problem is usually keeping it open. We normally do those in sections so there is always somewhere to park, and we would rather agree that up front than surprise you with it on the Monday.
Access, and older parts of the city
A fair number of York jobs are inside a conservation area or down a street where a paver is never getting in. That means hand laid work, smaller plant, barrowing material in, and knowing before we quote how far it has to be carried. All of that changes the price, so we look at it rather than estimating from an aerial photograph.
Villages between here and there
Plenty of our York side work is not in the city at all. It is the villages along the way: places where a house has a long gravel drive that has stopped working, or a farm entrance off a busy road that gets churned up every winter.
Being in Malton rather than in York is an advantage on that stretch, not a problem. It is a straight run out and we are usually there before a city firm has got through the traffic.
