A family business, three generations in
J.J. and A.W. Skeet are the two names the business was registered under, and it has stayed in the family ever since. It is now into its third generation, working out of the same part of North Yorkshire it started in.
That is not a sentimental point. It is the reason the business behaves the way it does. When you are still working in the town your grandfather worked in, a job done badly follows you around. Most of what comes in is either a repeat customer or somebody a repeat customer has spoken to.
What that means on site
The person who comes out and prices a job is usually on site while it is being laid. If something needs a decision halfway through, there is somebody there who can make it rather than a call back to an office.
We do our own groundworks rather than subcontracting them out, which matters more than it sounds. Most surfaces that fail, fail because of what was done underneath them, and if we have dug it out ourselves there is nobody to argue with about it.
The work we take on
Roughly half of it is domestic: drives, parking areas, paths and patios for people who live around here. The other half is farms, estates, private road associations and businesses, which tends to be larger, longer and more about drainage and load than about looks.
We are a surfacing contractor, not a civil engineering firm, and we are clear about the difference. If a job needs designing by an engineer we will say so.
Materials and suppliers
We buy from established suppliers and use materials that suit the job rather than whichever is cheapest that week. On a farm track that is about weight and drainage. On a drive in a village it might be about matching what is next door.
