Where the moors meet the vale
Pickering sits on the southern edge of the North York Moors, and the work there reflects it. Long drives off moor roads, farm tracks that run for hundreds of metres, and surfaces that have a great deal of water coming down onto them from higher ground.
Water is the whole problem
On this side of Ryedale a surfacing job is usually a drainage job first. Water coming off a hillside will find the softest thing in its way and take it apart, and it does not much care what the surface is made of.
So the useful work here is often groundworks: cutting channels and land drains, setting cross falls so water leaves a track rather than running down it, and putting the surface on afterwards. Doing it the other way round is how people end up paying twice.
Long tracks and private drives
A drive here can easily be a few hundred metres of it, and resurfacing the lot in tarmac is often more than the job needs. Surface dressing a sound track, or tarmacking only the steep and the turning sections and dressing the rest, gets you most of the benefit for a good deal less.

Villages round about
Thornton-le-Dale, Kirkbymoorside, Helmsley and the villages between them are all on this run, and it is a short journey, so it is easy for us to come and look at something small.
